Transnet SOC Ltd has noted plans by the South African Transport & Allied Workers’ Union (SATAWU) to embark on protest action on 3 November 2023. Transnet regards the planned protest action as unprotected because the union has not complied with compulsory prerequisites for a lawful protest, which include a structured process conducted by NEDLAC. As a result, SATAWU is not in possession of the required certificate from NEDLAC. SATAWU has been given until 27 October 2023 to provide a written undertaking that it will not embark on the unprotected protest and will not instigate others to do the same.

Transnet has issued a circular pointing out that if the action proceeds, the “no-work-no-pay” principle will apply and disciplinary action may be taken against employees participating in the illegal protest.

Contingency plans are being put in place in the event of the SATAWU leadership continuing with its action. Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) remains committed to resolving any possible disruptions by instituting the appropriate plans.

We will continue to keep you updated as the above develops. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding during this period.
